ISPs That Restrict IPTV — And How to Get Around It

A small number of internet providers apply traffic shaping that specifically slows down streaming or VPN-style traffic during peak hours. Here is how to recognize the symptoms and the fix that resolves it in most cases.

If your connection tests fast but IPTV still buffers heavily — especially in the evening, between roughly 7pm and 11pm — the cause is often traffic management on your internet provider's network rather than your equipment or our servers.

How to recognize ISP throttling

  • Buffering happens mainly at specific times of day (typically evenings/weekends) rather than constantly.
  • A regular speed test shows normal speeds, but streaming still stutters.
  • Other streaming services (YouTube, Netflix) are also occasionally affected during the same hours.
  • Downloading a large file is fine, but continuous video streams degrade after a few minutes.

The fix: change your DNS and/or use a dedicated streaming VPN

Traffic shaping is usually based on recognizing the "signature" of streaming traffic. Two changes typically resolve it:

  1. Switch your DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) in your router or device network settings — this alone resolves a meaningful share of cases tied to ISP DNS-level interference.
  2. Use a reputable VPN on the streaming device or your router if DNS alone doesn't fully resolve it. This re-routes and encrypts your traffic so it can no longer be selectively deprioritized. Choose a VPN with servers close to your actual location to minimize added latency.
Note: a VPN adds a small amount of latency by design. If buffering appears only after enabling a VPN, try a different server location, ideally in your own country, before ruling the VPN option out.

Providers known to apply aggressive traffic shaping

Policies change over time and vary by region and plan, so we won't name specific ISPs here — what matters is the pattern above (time-of-day-specific buffering despite good raw speed). If that pattern matches your situation, the DNS and VPN steps above resolve it in the overwhelming majority of cases.

If the fix doesn't work

Rule out device and app-level causes first by working through our guide on buffering & freezing. If everything checks out and the issue is clearly time-of-day specific, contact your ISP directly and ask about "traffic management" or "network prioritization" policies on your plan.
