Troubleshooting: Playback Errors — How to Fix Them

Playback errors — black screens, "unsupported format" messages, or the app closing mid-stream — usually come down to the player app, the device's codec support, or a stale channel list. Here's how to isolate and fix each one.

Unlike buffering (which is a network issue), playback errors mean the stream isn't loading or decoding at all. Work through these checks in order.

1. Update your player app

Outdated versions of IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate or your Smart STB firmware are the most common cause of sudden playback errors after a channel or codec change on our end. Check your app store or the player's own update menu and install the latest version before anything else.

2. Refresh your playlist

Channel lineups and stream sources are updated regularly. Most players cache the playlist locally, so an outdated cache can point to a channel that's since moved. In your player, look for Settings → Playlist → Force Update (or delete and re-add your account) to pull a fresh copy.

3. Try an alternate stream format

Some older devices don't support every video codec. If a specific channel fails while others work fine, try switching the stream type in your player's settings between HLS and TS (if your player offers the option) — one of the two will typically play correctly on hardware that struggles with the other.

4. Clear the app's cache and data

On Android-based devices, go to Settings → Apps → [your player app] → Storage → Clear Cache. If the issue persists, "Clear Data" resets the app entirely (you'll need to log back in with your MYSTARR credentials, so keep your activation email handy).

5. Test the same channel on a different device

Open the same channel on your phone or a browser-based player if available. If it plays fine there, the issue is device-specific (codec/hardware limitation); if it fails everywhere, let support know — it may be a temporary source issue we can fix server-side within minutes.

6. Confirm your subscription status

An expired or soon-to-expire subscription can sometimes present as a generic playback error rather than a clear "expired" message, depending on the player. Check your status any time in your wallet dashboard.

If a specific channel consistently fails across multiple devices, it's very likely a source-side issue on our end — message support with the exact channel name and we'll investigate immediately.
